Some good updates on EnterpriseOne over at the JD Ewards Advisor blog.
Scaling Up
The High Scalability blog has some links to a presentation (slides and video) on how Google deals with scaling up (as you can imagine, they do a lot of that). I hope you have better luck with the video, I gave it five minutes and it still didn't finish downloading, so it may be 'overwatched' at the moment. In a way, that's mildly amusing, considering the video isn't scaling to meet demand. But the slides downloaded fine, and are full of eminently technical material (suitable for menacing non-technical relatives, saying that 'this is really interesting stuff' and 'just sit down here and I'll explain it all in terms you can understand').

April CPU Out, Humor
April CPU
The April CPU security patches are out. Start your way through the maze of documentation, binaries etc., right here at Metalink.
As always, test it, on the same equipment and load level as production if at all possible. Some errors only become evident at full load, so it's important to come up with a way to test under load. The traditional way to do this is to buy a load simulator (usually really expensive) and customize it for your system (even more expensive). But there are alternatives using scripts that can come close. My personal approach for customers is that they probably want to get this into test right away, but only apply on prod after a little time has passed, just in case. (And no, by 'a little time' I don't mean a geological period or until the next CPU, or until the DBA retires!).

On a (much) lighter note, I just came across a link at Dark Roasted Blend, one of my favorite non-Oracle related blogs, pointing to this YouTube link of Sid Caesar and Nanette Fabray setting an argument to Beethoven's 5th. Brilliant!

Critical Patch Update April 2008 (CPUApr2008) for Oracle and PeopleSoft Products
Oracle released the Critical Patch Update April 2008 to resolve a number of security vulnerabilities in Oracle, and PeopleSoft, and Siebel SimBuilder products.
An email communication to all customers announcing CPUApr2008 was sent on Tuesday, April 15. The information for the completed patches will be made available on MetaLink and Customer Connection on April 15.

People are trying to get their minds around the concept of SOA, and Antony Reynold's blog expands on the concept of SOA being like laundry rather than like legos. I must admit to missing the days when this stuff was like, oh, computer programs.

Heros of the DB
Hero Worship
This week we posted here at the Infogram on superheros and the DB, now we'll get a little more down to earth, with a posting at Richard Foote's Oracle Blog on his Top 5 Influencial DBAs in My Career. I can only second his selections. But he actual only has four of them in the first posting, leaving us all waiting for the other shoe to drop for the last. He promises it will be someone controversial. It's almost certainly Bill Gates.
Big coincidence, by the way. Everyone on the list is an Oak Table member.

It looks like you don't have to miraculously recover lost data to be a hero anymore, just use Oracle and you will likely acquire comic-book type superpowers. See this site for details.
I'm personally trying out for Hulk. I've got the weight part. Now I just need the superhuman strength, armor skin, etc.

DBA Book, Hyperion, 11g Alert Log, Preventing Data Leaks
New DBA Book Out
Christopher Lawson, who wrote one of the better performance books of recent years, The Art and Science of Oracle Performance Tuning, has come out with a new tome (well, it's bit small to be a tome, but that sounds so much nicer). Snappy Interviews, 100 Questions to Ask Oracle DBAs is a set of questions and answers arranged by skill level for interviewers to use when conducting technical interviews with Oracle DBAs. The questions are all on the core RDBMS, not EBS or other Oracle products.
This could be a very handy book to have in your IT shop. Often the person giving a technical interview isn't the Oracle DBA, but a sys admin, programming manager or other position. This book will let you generate some good questions and get a pretty good idea if you are hearing 'review blather' or experience.
Of course there is a certain amount of flexibility one has to use in these interviews. In working with DBAs (and as a DBA) over the years I've found there are several different basic personality types. Only some of those personality types know the names of things directly at all times. The others are really fast at looking things up that they worked with before or really good at finding out what they don't know. Most of the questions in this book, however, cover ground that every experienced core DBA is likely to know, so it's a good investment. There is also a class of DBAs who don't know, don't really care, and hope for the best. Hopefully this book will help you keep those DBAs working in other companies, preferably your competitors' shops.
Of course a lot of DBAs wanting to interview for jobs are going to buy this book to 'cram for the tech interview', so make sure you get a few questions that aren't in the book to throw at them as well, such as: 'What is the air speed velocity of an unburdened swallow?' or 'What is your favorite color?' You'd be surprised how many people get thrown by that last one.
Hopefully, since Chris works in the realm of financial applicitions, he will produce a companion volume to this on questions to ask an Apps DBA.

Of course a lot of DBAs wanting to interview for jobs are going to buy this book to 'cram for the tech interview', so make sure you get a few questions that aren't in the book to throw at them as well, such as: 'What is the air speed velocity of an unburdened swallow?' or 'What is your favorite color?' You'd be surprised how many people get thrown by that last one.
Hopefully, since Chris works in the realm of financial applicitions, he will produce a companion volume to this on questions to ask an Apps DBA.

China Business Notes
China Business
Some of you may be wondering why we run articles on business in China in an Oracle Support blog. Well, three basic reasons
1. We can (fairly predictable and pretty darn tautological as well).
2. A lot of our customer have major business interests in China (ok, that might work).
3. The editor is studying Chinese and has been a major fan of Chinese culture all his life (Aha! Now we're getting to the bottom of it).
Anemic Stocks and the Flattening of IPOs
Well, we all knew that the mega-IPOs in China were a bit inflated. And what else is inflated? Why bubbles, of course. Things seem to be settling down a bit according to this article at the China Economic Review.
And there's a few words of caution to be found at the Managing the Dragon blog this week as well.

Infogram Weekend Edition, APEX 404
Infogram Weekend
This week we have interviews (they can keep you busy during a brief Metalink outage).
Over at the Mental_Floss blog is a link to the The Mike Wallace Interview . The University of Texas has an archive of videos available of this show from the late 1950s by Mike Wallace, later of 60 Minutes fame. I enjoyed watching the one with Salvador Dali, whom I hadn't seen on video since I was a child and saw him on the Tonight Show a time or two.
Right now I'm listening to Erich Fromm trying to scare people with megawar (I think it worked), and later I'm going to give Aldous Huxley a whirl.
Full shows, 1950s commercials and all. Be prepared to deal with hearing about the wonderful filters on Parliament cigarettes.

And since this is the weekend edition, here's a collection of fun and useful 404 pages from a contest over at Smashing Magazine.

- Throwing CPU at the problem. Rarely helps, plus the CPUs are made of silicon and tend to break when thrown at the problem.
- Throwing disks at the problem. Much louder than solution one, but only works if you were actually short on disk space, not just trying to throw something at the problem.
- Increasing caching. Okay, now we're getting somewhere. If you can cache more data AND design the application to make use of that cache you may actually improve things.
