Oracle Infogram This WeeK: CPU, Hyperion, PeopleSoft, RDBMS, Linux and VM, ECM, Sun, WLS, Oracle Support

CPU

The January Critical Patch Update is available. Read all about it here at the Oracle E-Business Suite Technology blog:

Critical Patch Update for January 2011 Now Available

Hyperion

Boy does this program linked from Cameron's Blog For Essbase Hackers look like a handy tool for Essbase users. As with all outside our firewall, please test carefully (yeah, well, alright, test our stuff too.): Introducing Data Detective

PeopleSoft

From the PeopleSoft Technology comes this announcement: New version of the PSFT HCM 9.1 OVM Template

RDBMS

An interesting blog I somehow didn't notice before is Oracle database internals by Riyaj. Here's a sample: Books and presentations

From our Oracle Luxembourg XPS on Database team comes this really techie article on Clusterware 11gR2 – Setting up an Active/Passive failover configuration.

Perhaps it's McGyver syndrome, but I somehow picture them doing this in their garage using a set of modified Palm Pilots networked to use the magnetron from an old microwave to calibrate the cluster. The technical challenge is: How to keep production up while using the cluster to nuke a burritto?

Someone else to join the crowd around the microwave is Porus Homi Havewala, author of this article on how to Provision Your Oracle RAC Systems Using Oracle Enterprise Manager over at Technet.

Linux and VM

We're doing some very exciting things with the combined force of hardware, OS, and software. This TechCast Live on Linux and Virtualization with Wim Coekaerts, SVP Linux Engineering is well worth your time.

ECM

The Oracle ECM Alerts - Product News & Information blog lets us know that Oracle Enterprise Content Management 11gR1 Patch Set 3 has been Released.

Sun

Follow the path from Oracle Technology Network Blog (aka TechBlog) to the OTN Garage blog to find out more about the status and location of Sun Microsystems documentation.

WLS

At the WebLogic Server blog you might expect to hear about something like WebLogic Server 10.3.4 Released - Key APIs of Java EE 6 and More. Well, you're right. Please give it a read.

Oracle Support

I know that creating an SR can be a bit frustrating at times, especially when the situation is very critical and you don't really want to spend a bunch of time dotting i's and crossing t's under the angry glare of an executive with a down server, but please take the extra moment to fill out the subcomponent field. Not only will it help get the SR triaged to the right team more reliably, but it will generate better statistics for response time within our system.

Oracle Infogram This Week: Patching, Exadata, Programming, SOAP, APEX, Hyperion , GoldenGate

Patching

EPM

There was a recent (Nov. 2010) change in the way nomenclature operates for patching on EPM. Please see this note in MOS for details: Release Nomenclature and Numbering for Oracle EPM Products (Doc ID 1219387.1).

Sun

Looking for a Sun patch? (I'm tempted to make some outrageous pun about shady patches, etc., but will show restraint). You can find some info at the Patch Corner blog (yes, they have a blog for that): Searching for Oracle Sun patches in My Oracle Support (MOS).

Exadata

There are a million stories in the city....thousands on Exadata...dozens on Exadata performance....only one from Tanel Poder on Performance Stories from Exadata Migrations.

Structured Data gives us some insight on Making the Most of Oracle Exadata – A Technical Review.

Programming

Ray::Apps.blog lets us know that Oracle enhanced adapter 1.3.2 is released.

SOAP

The ORA-00001: Unique constraint violated blog lets us know about

Awesome.

APEX

Triangle Circle Square tells us of something small but elegant to do in APEX: Adding tooltips to your Apex report.

Over at Technet you can find the rundown on Oracle Application Express Web Services Integration, including how to hook things up with Amazon S3, Amazon Store and alien spaceships. Well, two of those, anyway.

Hyperion

This is something that is handy for a lot more than Hyperion. Need a way to wipe out the data in a spreadsheet and leave the shell intact? in2Hyperion shows us how: Removing Data From Excel Templates.

GoldenGate

I've said before how much neater GoldenGate is than sliced bread and other innovations and achievements of western civilization. But it still doesn't play nice with absolutely everything in the Oracle universe, particularly compression, at least for now, so please read this cautionary note if you are planning to use GoldenGate (and then use it, because it's still neater than sliced bread): Oracle GoldenGate and Compressed Tables over at Oracle Notes.

Infogram This Week: Hyperion, EBS, WLS, Identity Management, ECM, VM, SQL, Performance, SQL Profiler, PeopleSoft

Hyperion

Looking for a way to link Oracle EBS with Oracle EPM (Hyperion) role based security? One of our SDMs found this valuable presentation recently:

To configure EPM System so that all of its functional security can be managed in the EBS UI, follow the steps highlighted in this document “Using EBS to Manage EPM Functional Security".

EBS

At the
Oracle E-Business Suite Technology blog this week:

Offloading (Some) EBS 12 Reporting to Active Data Guard Instances

BPEL 11.1.1.2 Certified for Prebuilt E-Business Suite 12.1.3 SOA Integrations

Customized Database Listener Names Now Supported for EBS

WLS

Brad Tumy lets us know how to recover from a pretty common and annoying error: forgetting the danged password on WLS: Recover Weblogic server admin password (on Linux).

Over at the
AMIS blog is concept I like: Oracle WebLogic: Configuring DyeInjection Monitor. And please don't tell people I recommended you inject dye into your servers. I know you are tempted some days to just pour coffee down the back of the unit and go home, but please resist the urge.

Identity Management

The
Talking Identity blog joins the burgeoning discussion of everyone's favorite buzz word of the year: cloud computing, with this article about Oracle's SSO: Future in the Clouds? How About Some ESSO-To-Go?

ECM

Oracle ECM Alerts - Product News & Information let's us know that the latest Quarterly Customer Update Webcast is coming up.

VM

Wim Coekaerts Blog brings us some handy info on Using Solaris zfs + iscsi targets with Oracle VM.

SQL

We usually post links to valuable internals material from
Tanel Poder, this time around it's just some fun. Take a look at these oddments: Is this valid SQL syntax? :-).

Performance

Oracle performance legend
Jonathan Lewis takes on the heavy topic of cost once again: Cost – again .

SQL Profiler

I never thought of this, but
Kerry Osbourne did, and it's something worth checking into with your Oracle Sales folks. SQL Profiler is part of an add-on pack, not the RDBMS itself: Licensing Requirements for SQL Profiles.

PeopleSoft

There's a New PeopleTools Developer Book Available. See the link on Oracle's own
PeopleSoft Technology Blog.

APEX

David Peake brings us the latest kick-the-tires, neater than sliced bread demo page for APEX new features: 4.0 New Features Application.

Security

Well, another week, another hulking vulnerability out of the blue: Telephony. Other than the obvious threat of human engineering which has been the classic platform for use of the telephone for nefarious purposes there is now a more direct, technical risk. Read about it from ComputerWorld: Recalculating the telephony security equation

Data Warehousing

The RNM blog came up with a whitepaper I had not seen before: Oracle Whitepaper – “Best Practices for a Data Warehouse on Oracle Database 11g”

Coding

Over at the Code of Our Lives blog there's a useful technique for Adding CLOB values to XML as CDATA.

Fusion Middleware

A good thorough rundown on basics and methods involved in: A Role-Based Approach to Automated Provisioning and Personalized Portals over at Technet.
